Asheville Vaudeville – Asheville’s LARGEST vaudeville show featuring WNC’s best comedy, juggling, magic, burlesque, acrobatics, aerial arts, short plays, puppetry, sideshow, music, and more!
Asheville Vaudeville and special guest, Danbert Nobacon of the legendary anarcho-punk band, Chumbawamba, will collaborate in the upcoming installment of Asheville Vaudeville Brunch, themed “Extravaganza Antifascismo” The performance will feature Danbert Nobacon’s original acoustic music whilst a ragtag group of clowns and freaks come together to create an amusing array of mayhem and maybe even rescue democracy from the threat of a nefarious fascist regime by using their superpowers of comedy, comradery, common sense, sensuality, and an earnest exercising of their collective free-speech muscles. The ever-evolving group of artists has been collaborating under this banner since 2002, with notable long-time staples including Toybox, America’s Favorite Cartoon Witch; Rigel the Clown; Claire Dima, Barefoot Bellydancer Extraordinaire; and others. Danbert Nobacon was a founding member of the legendary British-based Anarcho-punk band, Chumbawamba. The band was known in England for decades for their committed activism with message-laden songs, prankster antics, benefit performances, and feet on the ground to promote animals’ rights, workers’ rights, LGBTQ+ rights and protection, women’s rights, free speech, anti-authoritarianism, political prisoners’ rights, anti-war agendas, and environmental conservationism. Chumbawamba were catapulted to the world stage with their chart-topping anthem, “Tubthumping.” Danbert Nobacon continues to create meaningful art both solo and in new collaborative projects to promulgate his views of what humanity could aspire towards through music, writing, theater, comedy, and community activism. His songs are dense with lyrics and woven together with a series of skits into full length albums that convey more like theatrical performances. This quality of his composition style is highlighted in the name of his most recent LP, “Kochtopus’s Garden – Now That’s What I Call Capitalism – The Musical.” Danbert’s website describes him as a freak, music legend, author, artist, mischievous political goblin, genre-hopping punk-folk thespian, Chumbawamba alumni, who lives in and works out of, Twisp, WA, in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, in North Central Washington, USA. His performance with Asheville Vaudeville at The Grey Eagle will be the last
stop on his 2025 US East Coast tour, “East-o-ween, Exit War.” The tour’s name was meant to bring attention to the horrific genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the need for the US to divest from its involvement in funding and arming the killing. Since the plans for the peace-promoting tour began, that conflict, as well as cultural tensions here in the US, tragically, have only escalated. In this collaborative effort, the artists hope to bring their audience just the right balance of entertainment, education, comedic catharsis, actionable solutions, and hope.
