PATIO SHOW: The Tillers

etix OUTPOST 1362051724758888

– ALL AGES- STANDING ROOM ONLY- RAIN OR SHINE   The Tillers:   The Tillers got their start in August 2007 when they started thumping around with some banjos and guitars and a big wooden bass. Their earliest gigs were for coins and burritos on the city’s famous Ludlow Street in the district of Clifton. The songs they picked were mostly older than their grandparents. Some came from Woody Guthrie, some were southern blues laments, and many were anonymous relics of Appalachian woods, churches, riverboats, railroads, prairies, and coal mines.Their look didn’t fit the stereotype. They were clearly recovering punk rockers with roots in city’s west side punk rock and hardcore scene. The punk influence gave their sound a distinctive bite, setting them apart from most other folk acts- a hard-driving percussive strum and stomp that brought new pulse and vinegar to some very old songs. But their musical range soon proved itself as they floated from hard-tackle thumping to tender graceful melody, all the while topped by Oberst and Geil’s clear tenor harmonies.  They began picking up weekly gigs around the city’s bar scene. It didn’t take long before their signature treatment of classic folk songs became the preferred versions of Cincinnati locals. Their audiences swelled, growing into an assortment of grey-haired mechanics, neo-hippies, farmers, punkers, professors, and random strays all stomping, clapping, singing, and belting outbursts of “John Henry!” “Darlin’ Corey!” Ever since, the band has come to each show with the same energy. They are magnetic showmen, mature musicians, and colorful storytellers. Opening sets by The Montvales, and Frances Eliza  Frances Eliza: Asheville-based singer/songwriter and guitarist Frances Eliza blends her love of songwriting with her passion for jazz, folk, and pop music. Performing around NC and SC for over a decade, Frances has been described as “An intimate storyteller who invites the listener into her private life as she shares and explores experiences of love, loss, and pain.” Influenced by artists like Joni Mitchell, The Cranberries and Taylor Swift, Frances has performed solo and with many talented musicians at hundreds of venues over the past decade, and has released 2 original EPs thus far.

OUTPOST: Yesterday’s Clothes with Cigarettes @ Sunset & Paprika

Their exhilarating performances are a testament to their camaraderie and their desire to create a welcoming & inclusive atmosphere for fans. They thrive on the energy exchanged between the stage & the crowd, ensuring that every show is a memorable experience for all. With a deep love for music & a passion for the outdoors, Yesterday’s Clothes find inspiration in both realms. When they’re not creating infectious melodies, you’ll often find them camping & exploring the natural wonders around Asheville. This sense of adventure infuses their music, resulting in a unique blend of indie alternative rock. Embrace the thrill to their irresistible rhythms & be part of the incredible adventure that is Yesterday’s Clothes.   Cigarettes @ Sunset Bio:   Cigarettes @ Sunset is a five-piece band based in Boone, North Carolina. Comprised of bassist and backup vocalist Wells Whitman, drummer Ethan Moore, violinist Sarah Vann, rhythm guitarist and lead singer Garrett Dellinger, and lead guitarist Ryland Bagbey. The band’s music juxtaposes driving guitar riffs, drums that swerve out of country and punk,  with swelling violin, and Dellinger’s semi-autobiographical lyrics anchor the band in both time and place. Their live shows turn any venue into an intimate and energized space, amalgamating shoegaze, old time, and indie rock into a whirlwind of sound.   Paprika:   Paprika, an indie rock outfit from Asheville, NC, presents “melody.” The track features heady, soaring vocal arrangements over churning rock guitars and a tight, driving rhythm section groove. The lyrics are laconic and distant, casting abstract musings on love and desire against a restless backdrop of crashing guitars and spacey, reverb-drenched harmonics. Mirroring the lyrical content, the song unfolds in winding, dream-like fashion – opening softly with subdued, shimmering guitars, before bursting into a searing rhythmic throb, and finally fading into the distance amidst an echoing desert-rock wail.

[CANCELED] Matthew Sweet

etix Matthew 1352811724666479

Due to a medical illness and on doctors advice, Matthew Sweet must cancel all remaining upcoming shows with Hanson, and his own headline dates, from October 10 thru November 16. Matthew needs to pause traveling for a period of recovery. We plan to have Matthew and his band back out on the road in 2025. Thank you for your understanding, and please wish Matthew a speedy recovery, and a return to action soon.      ALL AGESSTANDING ROOM ONLY   MATTHEW SWEET After spending the ’80s as an up-and-coming jangle pop multi-instrumentalist with acts like Oh-OK, Lloyd Cole, The Golden Palominos, and The Buzz of Delight, Matthew Sweet emerged as the leading figure of the power pop revival with the release of his platinum-selling breakout record Girlfriend in 1991. Sweet adhered to traditional song craft, yet subverted the form by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock, resulting in an amalgam of the Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., and Neil Young. Girlfriend became a word-of-mouth critical and commercial hit with its title track reaching the Top Five on the Modern Rock charts and its anime-styled music videos entering heavy rotation on MTV.   His next two records, Altered Beast (1993) and 100% Fun (1995) continued the hot streak, producing multiple top ten singles and achieving gold and platinum sales. Sweet’s success continued in the late ‘90’s and 2000’s with successful US and European tours, major label releases (including Blue Sky on Mars, In Reverse, Modern Art), and a revered collaboration series with Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) – Under Covers Vols. 1-3. More recent studio albums Sunshine Lies and Tomorrow Forever are championed by critics as persuasive testaments to the enduring qualities of Sweet’s adventurous, emotion-charged songcraft. On Matthew’s thirteenth album, Catspaw (2021), he plays every instrument (except drums) for the first time in his career. American Songwriter called it “a one-man show of sorts that represents another high point in a career that’s now almost four decades long and shows no signs of lagging.” 2024 saw the release of a newly remixed and remastered archival live recording of Sweet’s epic July 4, 1993 headline performance at WXRT’s “Taste of Chicago” in Chicago’s Grant Park.
