Old Marshall Jail Ballad Swap
ALL AGES SEATED SHOW THE OLD MARSHALL JAIL BALLAD SWAP The Old Marshall Jail Ballad Swap is a celebration of Appalachian heritage, hosted by Josh Copus, Donna Ray Norton, Sheila Kay Adams, and Melanie Rice. This casual “front porch” gathering brings together ballad singers from across the region to share stories and songs that have been passed down for generations. Madison County, known for its rich ballad tradition, was famously described by English folk song collector Cecil Sharp as a “nest of singing birds” in 1916. The ballad tradition here goes back at least nine generations, making it one of the oldest unbroken oral traditions in the U.S. Although the Old Marshall Jail was damaged by Hurricane Helene, the Ballad Swap will continue at new locations, starting with the Grey Eagle. Join us as we preserve and celebrate this important cultural tradition on the road! We will also be sharing information about our upcoming album release – The Marshall Sessions as the Nest of Singing Birds and our recent invitation to the Folk Alliance International showcase in Montreal, Canada in Feb 2025.
Big Richard
ALL AGESSTANDING ROOM ONLY BIG RICHARD The world-class musicians in Big Richard initially convened in 2021 for a festival date. The quartet showed up to the one-off like it had been together for years, bursting with jaw-dropping virtuosity; playfully irreverent stage banter; stunning four-part harmony vocal interlace; imaginative arrangements; a refreshingly eclectic repertoire; and a healthy dose of lady rage. Quickly things for the Colorado-based, neo-acoustic supergroup morphed into something way bigger than a one-and-done appearance. The sellout club shows, and the confirmed festival dates across America drastically changed its members’ lives. Now, Big Richard is poised to penetrate the Americana music world and beyond. To date, the quartet has issued 3 singles, the Live from Telluride album, and it has new music on the way. THE WILD SHOATS The Wild Shoats are an Alt-Folk group who make music rooted in, and informed by their Appalachian home. West Virginia native Mary Linscheid, brothers Gus and Huck Tritsch of Millheim, PA, and Alex Heflin of Morgantown, WV, set an alt-folk soundtrack to the strange late-stage capitalist Appalachia they grew up in. Calling on their collective backgrounds in folk songs, honky tonk, and the Appalachian high-lonesome sound, the Shoats reimagine the songs and sounds of their home through haunting original material and well-loved covers. The Shoats won the Appalachian String Band Music Festival’s Neo-Traditional Band Competition in 2023, just a few months after the band’s formation.
