Jesse Roper

etix Jesse 2348501736944278

ALL AGESSTANDING ROOM ONLY   JESSE ROPER Based in Victoria, BC, Jesse Roper is a blues/Americana artist with a penchant for writing modern indie-infused blues music and delivering bombastic live performances buoyed by his virtuosic guitar playing. His innate and impressive musical talent has served him well, giving him the flexibility to play with soul icon Booker T. Jones, rock veteran Colin James, blues belter Beth Hart, and Canadian legend Burton Cummings. The stage is where Roper shines. It has been his home since overcoming crippling stage fright during his early twenties. Fear is a part of Roper’s past that barely seems real today – especially when you see the in-concert image of a six-string soldier, hair matted to his face, tearing up the stage, without a hint of second-guessing.  Roper’s last album ‘Horizons’ marked a sonic high point in his career thus far. Working closely with famed JUNO-nominated producer Gus van Go (Metric, The Stills, Whitehorse, Arkells, The Trews, Sam Roberts) on that new collection of songs has pushed Roper into creating some of his best work. “Recording with Gus and Werner F was on a whole new level.  Roper released the first single off his upcoming LP (to be released in late 2023) “Make It All Work Out” on March 29th, 2023. The song charted on Canadian terrestrial and satellite radio throughout the spring and early summer. Now all eyes are on the next release, “Throw This Rope” produced by Gus van Go (Metric, Whitehorse, Sam Roberts Band). The song will be the second of multiple energetic, fresh, soulful and r&b inspired tracks from a forthcoming LP that harkens the voices of JJ Cale, The Teskey Brothers, Ben Harper and others – while maintaining Roper’s strong and unique expression in the genre.  When asked to describe the song, Jesse remarks, “Throw This Rope is about being told how to run your life and career by folks who are currently running theirs aground. I sure don’t know everything and I never will but I’ve been given every manner of advice from folks who have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s frustrating sometimes.” Jesse is a master at connecting his personal story and experiences to his songwriting – crafting narratives that hit on life’s challenges and eccentricities – but that remain upbeat, engaging and wildly entertaining songs.  Adventuresome doesn’t properly describe Roper as an artist, because when the guitar-wielding dynamo sets out to accomplish something, there’s no telling where his mind will wander, or when his energy will go. JACOOZY Jacoozy is a five-piece band based in Asheville, NC, delivering a dynamic fusion of rock, funk, jazz, and alternative. Featuring guitarists Killian Wright and Will Fentress, drummer Pauly Scott, keyboardist Isaac McMurray, and bassist Ramon Garcia, the group is known for electrifying live performances and masterful improvisation. Since their 2021 formation, they’ve built a dedicated following across the Carolinas and the Southeast. Their 2022 self-titled EP, featuring the hit Cold Hearted (500K+ streams), put them on the map, and with a brand-new album on the way, Jacoozy is just getting started.

Tan & Sober Gentlemen + Driftwood

etix Tan 2344281736848826

ALL AGESSTANDING ROOM ONLY   TAN & SOBER GENTLEMEN Born and raised in North Carolina, the Tan and Sober Gentlemen began taking the songs, stories, and tunes that make up their beloved state’s musical tradition before they could talk. The music of the Carolinas, (and Appalachia in general) stems from the marriage of the Irish fiddle and the African banjo, which first met in the American South before the Revolution. The Tan and Sober Gentlemen aim to bring these traditions full circle. They play Irish tunes, ballads, and pub songs right next to the Appalachian fiddle tunes of their youth, melding the two into what they call “Irish-American hillbilly music.” Meanwhile, they have earned a reputation as one of the South’s hardest-hitting live acts, playing at blazing tempos, and putting every last bit of energy they possess into the show. The result is a raucous celebration of the Carolinas’ Irish heritage, with drinking, dancing, and merriment galore. Since their formation in 2017, the six-piece band has toured the US and Ireland, headlining legendary Irish clubs such as Whelan’s and the Roisin Dubh. Stateside, their resume includes festivals such as Bristol Rhythm and Roots, Appaloosa Festival, Tartan Day South, and Shakori Hills. In January of 2023, in their home of Alamance County, they sold 800 tickets to their show at the Haw River Ballroom. They released their sophomore record, Regressive Folk Music, in June 2022, and their debut record, Veracity, was named by Shite’n’Onions as one of the five best Celtic punk records of 2019 and 2020. DRIFTWOOD Music has guided Driftwood to hallowed ground many times since its founding members, Joe Kollar and Dan Forsyth, started making music as high schoolers in Joe’s parents’ basement. Whether the Upstate New York folk rock group—which today also includes violinist Claire Byrne, bassist Joey Arcuri, and drummer Sam Fishman—are converting new fans on a hardscrabble tour across the country or playing to a devoted crowd at hero Levon Helm’s Woodstock barn, the band’s shapeshifting approach to folk music continues to break new ground. And yet in many ways Driftwood’s latest work, the transformative December Last Call, finds the group coming home.  Recorded in that very same basement where the Driftwood dream began, December Last Call lyrically reflects on the recent past, musing on the ways the group grew up, together and apart, through curveballs like new parenthood or pandemic shutdowns. But sonically, the band’s sixth album looks confidently to the future, experimenting with new sounds while staying true to the bluegrass roots that built them. Across the album’s nine tracks, the band often leans into hard-rocking electric guitars and driving percussion: On “Every Which Way But Loose,” we get a foot-tapping beat and a sweeping chorus, and on “Up All Night Blues,” the band shines with an ambling, sing-along-able reflection on the challenges of new motherhood. But other tracks, like standout closer “Stardust,” take a simpler route, allowing bare-bones vocals and acoustic instrumentals to underpin a deeper emotional message.

The Ohio-raised and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist knows the hopelessness of an impoverished upbringing surrounded by addiction firsthand. However, he also knows what the light at the end of the tunnel feels like—because he dug himself out of despair and found that light. Growing up in Blanchester, OH, he initially lived in a small home. His mother fell prey to drugs and mental health turbulence, leaving Nolan and his brother to be raised by dad—who worked several jobs to make ends meet. He bounced around from place-to-place until life settled down during sophomore year of high school. Music offered a semblance of stability. Upon graduating high school, Nolan tirelessly gigged anywhere he could. A live video of “68” (which directly addresses the relationship with his mom and the topic of addiction) went viral and caught the attention of Atlantic Records. He gained traction with the Life & Love EP and Live From The Living Room EP. Beyond sharing bills with everyone from The Revivalists and City and Colour to 49 Winchester, Charley Crockett, and Band of Horses he sold out his headline Cincinnati Heart Tour. He contributed “Driving You Home” to Twisters: The Album, which accompanied Twisters and is nominated for a GRAMMY®. Now, he invites audiences into the heart of where he grew up (and the Heartland of the country) on his 2025 self-titled full-length debut, Nolan Taylor [Atlantic Records].   THE HILL COUNTRY DEVIL

With a voice that resonates with authenticity and depth, Milligan has captivated audiences with his soulful performances and magnetic presence. From an early age, Milligan displayed a natural inclination towards music, drawing inspiration from country legends like George Strait, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, George Jones and Elvis. Armed with an appreciation for the history of country music, Drake Milligan moved to Nashville and immediately jumped into co-writes and recording sessions, where veteran songwriters taught him the art of storytelling, legendary producers taught him how to perfect his voice, seasoned musicians backed the new guy, and his country music heroes shared advice on how to bring his music to life on stage. When it came time to craft his sound though, the country traditionalist turned to his roots: Texas. His debut album Dallas / Fort Worth via Stoney Creek Records, produced by award-winning music producer and industry icon Tony Brown (Brooks & Dunn, George Strait, Vince Gill) and songwriter/producer Brandon Hood, is stacked with songs all co- written by Milligan. Featuring 14 tracks, his double-barreled baritone vocals match electrifying honky-tonk hooks, Western swing two-steppers and country pop balladry. Milligan uncorks exuberant themes of trouble-making fun, young romance, life-sustaining love and more on the project. Never taking his boot off the pedal, the pure-country hitmaker’s Jukebox Songs EP – released on February 16 marking another bold chapter in Milligan’s book. Produced by fellow Texan and traditionally minded star, Trent Willmon (Cody Johnson), the EP once again highlighted Milligan’s smooth, booming baritone vocal, towering over four fresh tracks full of instant-classic intensity and diverse country soul…including the foot-tapper “I Got A Problem” and the delicate, rootsy arrangement of “Don’t Leave Me Loving You,” a timeless, classic-country style ballad, aching and built on a still-tender emotional wound. On Stones, Edwards discusses his faith stating “Stones is four songs that share the common thread of letting go and moving on – taking your negativity and giving it to God.” Upon release Stones received widespread support from country’s biggest outlets including Country Central, Whiskey Riff, Holler Country, and more.  In 2024, Edwards hit the road alongside other rising stars such as Wyatt Flores and Cole Chaney while continuing to build his reputation as a powerful live performer.  Raised in a musical family where bluegrass was the soundtrack of his upbringing, Edward’s influences run deep, from the banjo picking of his childhood to the storytelling of classic country. His live performances reflect this deep-rooted tradition, and his ability to share raw, personal stories with audiences has made him a standout in Americana, folk and country scenes.  COLBY T HELMS The Blue Ridge Mountains wind through eight states over a stretch of 615 miles. In Virginia, they overlook Franklin County south of Roanoke. Back in the day, bootleggers would refer to the area as “The Moonshine Capital of the World” due to its perfect placement to export contraband. These days, the textile mills of Rocky Mount and other once cozy-towns have shut down, leaving minimal opportunity and a lot of hopelessness. At the bottom of the Southwest Virginia foothills half-a-mile from the nearest neighbor, Colby Helms resides in an “underground house” built by his late father. He hunts and takes care of his mom. He also pens the kind of raw and real country music that cuts to the bone. After signing to Photo Finish Records, he introduces himself with a series of 2023 singles and his forthcoming debut album.

Chuck Ragan

ALL AGESSTANDING ROOM ONLY   CHUCK RAGAN People discover Chuck Ragan in different ways. Some people know Ragan from the pioneering punk act Hot Water Music he’s co-fronted for the past three decades. Others are aware of his successful solo career or the Revival Tour, a collection of traveling troubadours that included his peers like Frank Turner and the Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon. Some folks may have even come across him from the successful fly fishing operation he runs out of Grass Valley, California. The one throughline through all this is the way that Ragan approaches everything with a level of honesty and integrity that can’t be faked—and that sentiment is undeniable on Love And Lore, his first solo collection in ten years and one that’s being released as Hot Water Music take a well-deserved victory lap for their breakout album Vows, which came out earlier this year.  In some ways, it’s a miracle that Love And Lore even exists. The album was first conceptualized by Ragan in 2016, studio time was booked in 2019 and right before the recording was set to take place, COVID happened and all of Ragan’s musical projects had to be put on hold so he could focus on his fishing operation to provide for his family. “We got serious about making this album again in 2022, but I didn’t have a ton of time to devote to it between being physically exhausted and having a toddler,” he admits. “It was just chaos.” (This also includes a tree falling on guitarist/pedal steel/multi-instrumentalist Todd Beene’s house.) Eventually Love And Lore was recorded in early 2023 and the result is an album that showcases Ragan further transcending the “folk” label to create a collection of songs that see him stretching out as a songwriter to fearlessly explore new sonic territory.   NATE BERGMAN Nate Bergman, the Nashville by way of  D.C. singer-songwriter, is a performer with a voice that transcends generations. His powerful vocals create a timeless sound that weaves through the rich tapestry of Nashville’s musical heritage. Bergman’s unique ability to infuse elements of Country, Rock, Folk, and Soul results in a sound that resonates with an increasingly diverse audience. Anchored in Nashville’s vibrant music scene, Bergman’s journey began with a passion for storytelling through song. His live performances are a testament to his exceptional talent, marked by a magnetic stage presence that captivates audiences wherever he sings. Whether with an acoustic guitar or a full band, Bergman’s performances are a visceral experience, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness his artistry live. DYLAN WALSHE

Hackensaw Boys: “Love What You Do” 20th Anniversary Tour

etix Hackensaw 2078911735534436

ALL AGESSTANDING ROOM ONLY   HACKENSAW BOYS Roots music shapeshifters Hackensaw Boys have been making audiences holler and dance since way back in 1999. Formed in Charlottesville and now based in Lynchburg, Virginia, this hard traveling group has built an international following for their high-energy performances and down-to-earth presentation. Despite their roots in traditional music, their homegrown aesthetic (bolstered by the “charismo,” their calling card percussion instrument handmade from cans and other metal objects) belies their contemporary approach to songcraft and showmanship. Hackensaw Boys’ music today has just as much in common with the straight-ahead sound of the Del McCoury Band as it does with the indie rock of Pavement and the modern folk of the Avett Brothers and Mountain Goats. Their most recent LPs merge an old timey sonic palette with a folk-punk sensibility, with poignant lyricism, focused arrangements, and a deep groove all held together by bluegrass chops.   Hackensaw Boys are currently gearing up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of their most beloved albums. Love What You Do was released in August 2005 on Nettwerk Records. Compiled from sessions that took place in Charlottesville, San Francisco, and Amsterdam amid constant touring, so many of its cuts remain fan favorites to this day. “Sun’s Work Undone” and “Alabama Shamrock” showcase the band’s more delicate side with spacious instrumentation and enigmatic lyrics about love and longing. “Kiss You Down There” still gets requested at virtually every show, and “We Are Many” continues to be perfect fodder for the group’s electrifying encores. The latter, with its foot-stomping rhythm and shout-along chorus, has come to exemplify what many people love most about seeing the band live: that a Hackensaw Boys show isn’t a bluegrass show, it’s a rock and roll show played on banjo and fiddle with all the spirit of a hoedown. A LEE EDWARDS A. Lee (Alan) Edwards has been making music for 30 years. It’s been an essential element throughout his entire life. That said, his new music represents a rebirth of sorts, one that’s manifest in not one, but two new albums, Interpreting Heart Sounds Vol. I and Interpreting Heart Sounds Vol. II. Produced by Alan Lee Edwards and mixed by the legendary John Wood (the man behind the boards for Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, John Cale, Squeeze, and Richard and Linda Thompson), the new album is a major milestone in a career that has already spawned five albums — three under the aegis of “Lou Ford” and two under the handle of “The Loudermilks.”  Recorded at the famed Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville North Carolina, both albums were engineered by Kenny Harrington, mixed and mastered by the team at Well Made Music in Bristol, TN., and pressed locally at Citizen Vinyl in Asheville. Vol. 1 is a band-oriented effort, while Vol. 2 features a more stripped down sound with the addition of strings.

Now, the platinum-selling singer-songwriter is releasing CLIFF NOTES – The Best of 2014-2024 – an essential collection of Hutchinson’s ever-evolving discography. Pulling from fan-favorite albums including “Pure Fiction”, “Easy Street”, and “Sing Along!”, the new double-disc vinyl release showcases all the varied and dynamic music Eric has spent the past ten years exploring. To celebrate his new Best Of release, Eric is hitting the road in 2024 to perform all his most popular songs from the past ten years – pop anthems like “Tell The World”, “A Little More”, and “Dear Me”, as well as cult-classics like “Forget About Joni” and “a million bucks on a queen motel bed”. In addition to playing his more recent hits, Eric will also be sprinkling in songs from his landmark album Sounds Like This, including his instant-classics “Ok, It’s Alright with Me” and “Rock & Roll”. The “Best Of Eric Hutchinson” Tour is sure to be a memorable and uplifting night of music in an intimate setting. For each show, concert-goers will get to vote on the setlist, ensuring a unique and special show in every city. All of the evenings will be packed with music, soul, energy, and Eric’s signature dry sense of humor and storytelling. Plus, Eric will always be staying after his performances to meet fans, sign items, and take pictures. “Saying hello to people after the show has gotten to be my favorite part of the night,” Eric says. “I love getting to hear people’s stories and their personal connections to my songs.”  “A lot has changed for me since 2014”, Eric reflects. “I became a dad, I lost my father, I started taking anti-depressants, I lived thru COVID. Throughout it all, I’ve processed my feelings the only way I know how – through my songwriting. I know people are busy living their lives and don’t always have time to keep up with what I’ve been making. CLIFF NOTES is a streamlined way that listeners can explore my work from the last decade and maybe play a little catch up.” CLIFF NOTES is jam-packed with 22 of Eric’s best-known songs, plus two new originals that find a return to his soulful pop sound. “JOMO” is an infectious acoustic pop tribute to being an introvert, while “Spirit and Soul” is a sentimental, upbeat pop reflection on self-love and embracing aging. The two new songs come from an older, wiser person, but feel directly connected to the beginning of Eric’s independent recordings.  Taken as a whole, CLIFF NOTES is an exciting distillation of a decade of work from Eric Hutchinson, an artist and songwriter who refuses to be pinned down to one musical genre or attitude. It’s a diverse collection of songs that captures Eric Hutchinson growing up and continuing to search to understand his place in the world.

Dylan LeBlanc + David Ramirez

etix Dylan 2079781735534355

ALL AGESSTANDING ROOM ONLY 9:00 PM DOORS / 9:30 PM SHOW   DYLAN LEBLANC (full band)  Dylan LeBlanc is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who often finds himself flirting with the edge — or “dancing on a razor,” as he calls it — as it is all he has ever known. A verdict vagabond since he was a little boy tossed between Texas, Louisiana and Alabama, LeBlanc thrives on the precipice, never staying in one place for too long. It is that nomadic spirit that drew him not only to a life as a touring musician, but also to the beast that titles his newest record: ‘Coyote.’  LeBlanc says he has always related to the insatiable, scavenging nature of the wily coyote. Much like the animal, LeBlanc is a wanderer who knows when to trust his instincts, musically and otherwise. It is a spiritual kinship that runs deep, but he credits one particularly hair-raising face-to-face instance with solidifying his bond with the animal. LeBlanc was in Austin, Texas, climbing the face of a 100-foot cliff, gambling with Mother Nature’s good graces as he pulled himself up by tree branches. Once he reached the top, all that laid ahead of him was a lush treeline. There was a breath of stillness, then the sound of a thunderous rustling that drew closer and closer to him. In a blink, LeBlanc watched as a frenzied raccoon came speeding out of the treeline, trailed by an animal that stopped and stared at him with striking intensity: a coyote. ‘Coyote’ is LeBlanc’s first self-produced release, boasting a cherry-picked lineup of what he calls “killer session players,” such as drummer Fred Eltringham (Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow), pianist Jim “Moose” Brown (Bob Seger), and bass player Seth Kaufman (Lana Del Rey). Though ‘Coyote’ covers familiar ground for LeBlanc of living on the edge of danger and its many consequences, the record is both autobiographical and a concept album built around the character of Coyote, a man on the run. DAVID RAMIREZ (trio) Venerated singer/songwriter David Ramirez has announced the March 21st release of All The Not So Gentle Reminders (Blue Corn Music), his most ambitious album to date. The twelve-song collection is an eclectic musical journey, featuring richly textured arrangements, ethereal acoustic balladry, sweeping choruses and hints of cabaret. All The Not So Gentle Reminders may be the most liberating album in Ramirez’s body of work. The album, his sixth LP, is a creative revelation. “I love all the records I’ve made in the past,” says Ramirez. “But in making them, there was always the thought in the back of my mind of where and what it could get me…This time it was all about just the joy of making it, about having fun with it.”  All The Not So Gentle Reminders is a wide-ranging musical tour-de-force with Ramirez’s remarkable voice as the constant thread spinning stories and painting poetic imagery throughout. Whether through a faint whisper, a smooth croon or belting at the apex of a song, David Ramirez has a gift for conveying passion and emotion with each and every track. All The Not So Gentle Reminders is a reminder of the power music has to bring out many different emotions, often in the same song.
