Brooklyn-based artist, entertainer, and all-around showgirl Macy Rodman has been performing all over New York City for nearly a decade. Her musical output is like a hall of fun-house mirrors, each depicting a slightly distorted reflection of herself: on any given night, Macy might be a cabaret lounge singer, a punk iconoclast, or an underground pop icon. Across her three recorded albums and hundreds of live performances, Macy’s work has always been characterized by a cutting sense of humor and self-deprecation. But don’t be confused — her music is also mind-bending and provocative, both serious and absurd all at once.
Her latest album, Unbelievable Animals (released in 2021 via Shamir’s newly minted Accidental Popstar Records), finds Macy combining the sneering attitudes of Marianne Faithfull and Courtney Love with the giddy, ecstatic joy of a New York nightclub, where sugary club-ready beats mingle with ‘90s radio rock inflections. Unbelievable Animals is decidedly not a quarantine or isolation album. Rather, it’s quite the opposite: the sound of reemergence, rebirth, and the return to the dance floor.
