More than just a blues musician, Corey Harris is a seeker. For more than a decade, the guitarist-vocalist-songwriter has dug for the deepest and truest essence of the blues, reggae, gospel and other roots music by examining and celebrating their origins in various and diverse cultural centers - Africa, the Caribbean, North America and beyond.
But the honors and the accolades have come from sources beyond just the music press. In 2007, he was awarded a $500,000 MacArthur Fellowship - commonly referred to as a “genius award” - from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The annual grant, which recognizes individuals from a wide range of disciplines who show creativity, originality and commitment to continued innovative work, described Harris as an artist who “forges an adventurous path marked by deliberate eclecticism.” That same year, he was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine.

On October 6, we will release Lou Barlow's new album, Goodnight Unknown. In the four years since his career-redefining, mostly acoustic record Emoh, Lou Barlow has reunited with Dinosaur Jr. and reissued three of Sebadoh's classic albums. But as the brilliant new Goodnight Unknown illustrates, he's hardly living in the past. Borrowing the live-band energy of Dinosaur Jr. and the stylistic reach of Sebadoh, Barlow has built on Emoh's full production and written a set of immediate, melodic pop songs that Lou describes as, "a cross between my later work with Folk Implosion and my earlier work with Sebadoh...to my ... Lou Barlow + The Missingmen will be on tour throughout the fall opening for Dinosaur Jr. The Missingmen are guitarist Tom Watson and drummer Raul Morales. Lou "stole" them from Mike Watt for this tour, and is excited to be bringing you the full band experience of Goodnight Unknown.

Less than a year after their acclaimed, dark triumph The Knot, Baltimore's Wye Oak offer My Neighbor/My Creator, a vibrant EP that brims with melody and creative detours over five new recordings.
Collaborating with outside producers for the first time, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack's four new songs feel loose and direct, from the tumbling opener "My Neighbor" to the propulsive "Emmylou." "My Creator" and "I Hope You Die" begin like ballads but soon reveal unexpected layers of saxophone and percussion over Wasner's cascading vocals. Chris and Mickey Freeland, brothers with ties to everything from Oxes' math-rock explorations ... There's a heavier reliance on keyboards, culminating in Mickey's own stunning remix of The Knot's "That I Do" which must be heard to be believed.
Anything but a stopgap, My Neighbor/My Creator is yet another significant step forward for this young band.

It was the last day of January 2008- I was in Seattle and my dad was somewhere in Florida- and my mom sat alone during a thunderstorm on a couch in the house our family bought in 1970 in Hendersonville, TN just outside of Nashville. It is a long white ranch house that sits on a tall hill directly above Old Hickory Lake, surrounded by tall 100 year-old Beech trees. Well the storm outside that night pushed one of those old hollow trees further than it could bend and the broken tree split the house in half, beneath that tree was the roof, 2x4s, insulation, and my frightened mother screaming while trying to figure out if she was dead or alive, crippled or broken. The tree had broken two vertebra in her neck and she was the only one who could call 911- so from her rainy den she did - and within a year she and the house recovered. She is lucky to be alive and being a good, loving, Nashville songwriting son that I am, I got a good song out of her tragedy- as well as a title to my next record.
With Dodd Ferrelle & The Tin Foil Stars. Friday, August 13th. 9pm. $10 advance / $12 day of show.
